Red Field Study No.5
Ink and acrylic on rice paper
Approx. 8 × 9 3/4 inches (20.3 × 24.8 cm)
2023
A tightly cropped composition from the Red Field study series, this work focuses on the crest of the wave at the moment of break. The form is pushed forward, filling the picture plane and reducing negative space, creating a more immediate and immersive reading.
Painted to a full bleed, the red field and wave extend directly to the edges of the paper, eliminating the boundary present in earlier studies. This shift introduces a heightened sense of continuity, as if the image exists as a fragment of a larger, ongoing field.
The handling of ink balances fluid wash with defined line, allowing both structure and motion to remain visible. Subtle variations in tone and edge reflect the responsiveness of the rice paper surface, reinforcing the physicality of the process.
Signed in the upper right, the work stands as a distilled and resolved moment within the broader exploration of wave form and red field composition.
Works on paper are produced in limited annual quantities.
