A single wave rises diagonally across the panel, emerging from the lower left and expanding upward toward the right. Its mass stretches and thins as it lifts, holding a moment of suspension—an interval where weight, motion, and inertia briefly resolve into stillness before the inevitable descent.

A glowing red sun occupies the lower right quadrant, partially obscured and pressing into the edge of the wave. Built through layered pink and cadmium red, it introduces a concentrated field of warmth that contrasts against the surrounding depth of the surface. The background is constructed from cold ocean greens—turquoise and muted orange tones subdued with glazes of Payne’s grey—recalling the shifting color of coastal water under low light.

The wave itself is developed through layered blues and sea-green tones, articulated with stylized white linework that defines the structure of the form. These lines guide the eye along the surface, repeating and expanding as the wave rises, creating a sense of rhythm and internal movement within the larger mass.

Unlike the compression and collision present in earlier works, Emergence No.1 holds a quieter state. Energy remains present, but it is suspended—extended outward and upward, balanced between force and release.

This painting marks a continued expansion of the series through color and atmosphere. The use of colder tonal fields and controlled contrast introduces a different kind of depth—less about impact, more about space, light, and the perception of movement within stillness.

The result is a work that carries both weight and lightness: a single form held in a moment of clarity, where motion is not stopped, but briefly understood.
